Every week, elite professional athletes join our stellar soccer coaches to give your child extra training and inspiration during our soccer camps in Edmonton.
We’re still working on nailing down our coaches for the 2017 camps, but keep checking back as we will update this page constantly between now and July. Click here to see who we had out last summer!
FC Edmonton is coming back for round two at camp, just like Brett Kirkland. We get to
share our pitch with these football all-stars for two weeks this summer – Week 2 and Week 6 – and we could not be more excited. They’ll train with the kids and share a little bit of their experience as professional footballers. This will be a great experience for our campers to train with the best in the city, and learn a little bit about what it takes to be a professional athlete.
We are very lucky to have these wonderful athletes join us for round two at camp!
Kevin is joining us at Footie Camp because feelings of anxiety and fear were often a part of his day as he struggled with being gay in the sports world, but thanks to athletes who have shared their stories, allies who have shown their support and organizations like “You Can Play” Kevin is comfortable, confident, and ready to help remind others that “if you can play, you can play!”
Kevin has spent over a decade in the media industry – spending most of his time as a sports anchor and reporter at Global TV in Saskatoon. Most recently, he’s an award winning senior producer of the News Hour at 6pm on Global TV Edmonton and occasionally fills in on the sports desk.
He was born and raised in Edmonton and holds dual Portuguese – Canadian citizenship.
Dr. John Dunn
Dr. John Dunn is a professor from the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. He has a Ph.D. and M.A in Physical Education from the U of A, and two degrees in Physical Education and Sport Science from Loughborough University. He currently instructs courses in statistics, sport psychology, and sport for children.
Dr. Dunn is an expert in mental skills training for elite athletes, having provided training for Canadian national teams in curling, biathlon, alpine skiing, water polo and field hockey! He has also worked with various branches of the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian law enforcement and three NHL teams.
We are very privileged to announce that Dr. Dunn will be joining us at Footie Camp to create our very own mental skills training session! Our kids will truly be learning about sport psychology from an expert in a way that is meaningful to them. Topics such as perseverance, trust, and focus will be taught through interactive activities. Prepare to become psychological pro!
Brett is very excited to be joining the Footie Camp for a second year! Last year Brett had tons of fun with the little athletes and found it incredibly rewarding to watch each of them develop over the course of the camp. This year Brett will be on the field to work with kids on foot speed, agility and how to run with power and efficiency. Running is an essential skill for soccer, but you’d be amazed how many of us can’t do it well! Brett will give your child a solid foundation to explode down the sidelines and quickly change directions. We’ll give your kids the skills to have the fastest footie feet in Edmonton.
Personal training has been Brett’s full time job for almost a decade now and he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. He has had tons of experience working with young athletes at The Mount Carmel Hockey Academy, Above the Crease Goaltending, The Canadian Athletic Club and now Footie Camp! Seeing children wanting to improve at something they love is so amazing. Brett is well aware that not everyone is privileged enough to have trainers especially when they are young athletes, and Brett is committed to dedicating the time and energy to teach each of our kids the fundamentals and technique to move efficiently on the field. Brett strongly believes that every athlete should be given a fair chance to acquire the proper tools to become the best they can be and that is his goal when working with Free Footie!
